Yesterday I was reading a story to my second graders about sea creatures. From the story we learned that when a cuttlefish wears stripes it means he's looking for a mate. I was waiting for a hand to pop up and ask, "Ms. West, what does "mate" mean?" A few of them asked other questions, then we moved on to the next page. 'Whew!' I thought to myself. I had escaped! Until...pages later...one of my boys raises his hand and says...
"Ms. West, I know what "mate" means! It's like when you give somebody a hug."
Me: "You're kinda right. It means a boy is looking for a girl."
All the boys: "Eewwww. Grosss!!!!"
A little girl with an attitude stands up with her hands on her hips and says, "You may think that now, boys, but you'll change your mind later!"
Oh sheesh! I wanted to burst out with laughter, but I held it in and giggled under my breath instead. Too cute!
