throw away the key

Funny story that I just couldn't resist telling...

I overheard a fellow second grade teacher telling her students to "throw away the key." I decided to implement this into my classroom. I thought it would be a good way to get them quiet instead of constantly repeating "Boys and girls, please stop talking" or "Second graders, please turn your voices off." That gets really old, really quickly. So I showed them two simple motions that go with the saying, "Lock it up, and throw away the key." Well, they loved this and thought it was quite funny. Once their giggles settled, one of my "second grade friends" hunched over and started coughing uncontrollably. Then he looked up at me, with complete seriousness, and said, "Ms. West, I think I swallowed the key." Trying to hide my laughter, I chalked up, "Well, you weren't supposed to do that. You were supposed to throw it away." Then I turned away and laughed hysterically! Oh how I love their sense of humor! He made my day!
